Overview
Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen is the most distinctive restaurant at Universal CityWalk — a fully realised steampunk fantasy wrapped around a chocolate factory, complete with a back-story and costumed characters. It is best known for its outrageous milkshakes, but it is a proper full-service restaurant serving brunch and comfort food all day, not just a dessert stop.
The food and what to order
Cuisine: American comfort food, brunch and over-the-top desserts. The savoury menu spans burgers, sandwiches, salads, steak, pasta and an all-day brunch, so it works for a full meal. But the headline act is the milkshakes — towering, candy-and-cake-topped creations that are as much a photo op as a drink. Best bets: a signature milkshake (split one — they are enormous), the brunch dishes, and anything from the chocolate counter on the way out.
Price, who it suits and family-friendliness
Price: $$ (mid-range; the milkshakes are a notable add-on). Family-friendly: Very — the theming delights kids, and the menu suits all ages. It is equally fun for couples and groups who want something memorable. The one caveat is that it is a sit-down meal with a price to match, so for a pure dessert run you can also just queue for a shake to go.
Reservations
Reservations: recommended. Toothsome is one of CityWalk's most popular restaurants and walk-up waits can be long, especially evenings and weekends. Booking ahead online is the easiest way to avoid a queue. If you do not have a reservation, going at an off-peak time (mid-afternoon) improves your odds.
Pros and cons
Pros:
