The on-site perk that changes everything
Near Universal, where you stay is not just about convenience — it can transform your trip. Guests at Universal's top Premier hotels get free, unlimited Express Pass for their whole stay, letting you skip the regular line on most rides. For two or more people on a busy day, that perk can be worth more than the room itself, and it often makes even a one-night Premier stay cheaper than buying Express separately. This single fact drives most "where to stay near Universal" decisions — see the Universal Orlando guide for how Express Pass works.
Universal on-site hotel tiers
- Premier — Loews Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific — the top tier, and the only ones that include free unlimited Express Pass, plus early park entry and walk/boat access to the parks.
- Preferred (Loews Sapphire Falls, the Aventura) — mid-tier with early park entry and resort perks, but no free Express Pass.
- Value — Cabana Bay Beach Resort and the Endless Summer Resort — budget-friendly on-site options with early park entry, great for families watching the bottom line.
- Epic Universe hotels — the premium Helios Grand (with a direct entrance into the park) and the value Stella Nova and Terra Luna resorts, built around the new park.
All on-site tiers get Early Park Entry; only Premier includes free Express. Exact hotel names and perks evolve as Universal expands, so confirm current inclusions when booking.
Staying off-site near Universal
You do not have to stay on-site. International Drive runs right alongside Universal and has dozens of hotels at every price point, many a short drive or rideshare from the parks. Off-site trades the Express Pass perk and walkability for lower rates and more choice. If you are not fussed about line-skipping — or are visiting at a quieter time — an I-Drive or value hotel can be excellent value, with the savings often funding a paid Express Pass on the one busy day you need it.
How to choose
Quick rule of thumb: if you are visiting on busy dates and there are two or more of you, price a Premier hotel against your room cost plus paid Express — the Premier stay frequently wins. If you are on a budget, travelling off-peak, or do not mind standby lines, stay off-site or in a Universal Value resort and save. Larger groups should also weigh an Orlando vacation home. Whatever you pick, book early and compare your dates — use the options below to check live prices.
Doing both Universal and Disney
If your trip includes Disney too, location matters. Universal and Disney are about 20 minutes apart, and International Drive sits roughly between the tourist zones, making it a reasonable middle base. Many split-resort trips stay near Universal for the Universal days and switch hotels for the Disney stretch, or pick a central I-Drive hotel for the whole trip.
